303 Michel Lefftz 16 302 Summary – Master Balthazar, a Contemporary of the Master of Elsloo in Liège: a Provisional Inventory Although his name has been known for around a hundred years, Balthazar, a master sculptor who probably worked near Liège and likely came from the Lower Rhine or the Guelders area, has never been studied to date. This article presents a suggested initial inventory of his works, beginning with the ­ Crucified Christ from the parish church in Saint - Séverin - en - Condroz for which he was paid in 1532. In addition to the Calvary in St Nicholas’s Church in Liège, which may be regarded as his masterpiece, there are also the figures of the Crucified Christ belonging to the OCMW in Tongeren and in the churches of Cerexhe - Heuseux, Horion-Hozémont, Vielsalm, Mortier, Jenneret and Arolay. There are also grounds for attributing to him the Pietà in the Chapel of Notre Dame des Affligés in Floreffe, the St Roch in the Church of St John the Baptist in Tongeren, the St John in St Martin’s Chapel in Reppe, the St Remaclus in Ocquier (stolen), and the St Fiacre in Vyle - et - Tharoul.
