Frames and supports in 15th and 16th-century Southern Netherlandish painting
Tournai, Museum of Fine Arts 673 The stiles still contain the notches cut in at an angle from the side of the frame, to permit the insertion of hinges, held in place by nails planted into the moulding. This system for inserting hinges is rarely observed, but other examples do exist. The colourful polychromy of the frame – gold, alternating with red and blue (on black) − is original. The inclined sill at the bottom has been stripped.
