The construction of the present St Lambert’s Church in Neeroeteren was begun in the fourteenth century and continued in the sixteenth cent ury. 34 According to an archival document, on 4 April 1513 the Bishop of Liège, Evrard de la Marck, authorised the sale of municipal land to finance the further build- ing of the church, or in the original words: ‘und all dat gheen dat daeraff koemt sullen sy keren tot houre kerspells kyrcken um die daer mit forder tzo bouwen und tzo rus ten’. 35 In Middle Dutch ‘rusten’ can mean ‘uitrusten met’ 4.6 Fig. 4.6 St Lambert’s Church, Neeroeteren
