In 1576 bezocht Zuccaro de benedictijnerabdij Vallombrosa (op 20 km van Firenze), waar hij van verschillende monniken studies maakte, en waar ook deze tekening zou tot stand gekomen zijn (cf. opschrift). Sommige moesten dienen als ontwerpmateriaal voor de koepeldecoratie van de Florentijnse dom; in oktober 1575 had Zuccaro van Francesco de' Medici de opdracht gekregen deze te voltooien, na de dood van Giorgio Vasari die de decoratie had aangevat. De figuur van deze monnik werd uiteindelijk niet opgenomen in de voorstelling van het Laaste Oordeel in de koepel. - cf. catalogus KMSKB
