Het kasteel Batestein werd in 1371 gebouwd. Op één van de hoeken stond de forse toren "St. Pol", verbasterd tot "Simpeltoren" (rechts op de tekening). Deze toren is in 1771 afgebroken, de rest van het kasteel in 1828/9; nu staat enkel nog het (in de 17de eeuw toegevoegde) poortgebouw overeind.
